The West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own) (14th Foot) was an infantry regiment within the British Army, raised by Sir Edward Hales in response to the 1685 Monmouth Rebellion. In 1765, when stationed at Windsor, it was granted royal permission for the grenadiers to wear bearskin caps with the the White Horse of Hanover signifying the favour of the King. In 1958, it merged with The East Yorkshire Regiment (15th Foot) to create The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire. Subsequently, on June 6, 2006, it underwent further amalgamation with the Green Howards and the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (West Riding) to establish the Yorkshire Regiment (14th/15th, 19th, and 33rd/76th Foot).
In 1899, the 2nd Battalion was deployed to the Second Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa. Throughout World War I, various battalions of The Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) participated in significant battles, including Neuve-Chappelle, Loos, the Somme, Passchendaele, Ypres, Marne, Arras, Cambrai, and Gallipoli. The regiment reached its zenith with 37 battalions, earning 66 Battle Honours and receiving four Victoria Crosses.
