Description

*British, Early 20th Century, Very Large Bowie Knife with 11in Blade, Marked: The Celebrated Sheffield Bowie, A Cutler's Shop Window Advertising Piece*

Marked on blade: "The Celebrated Sheffield Bowie", "Made in, Sheffield Eng"

Approximate Measurements: 45.5cm overall, 28cm (11in) blade (no ricasso), 8.5cm at widest point, 13.5cm cross guard width

This is a substantial, fully functional English Bowie knife. Such large Bowies were often displayed in cutlery shop windows to attract attention and advertise their products. The knife features an 18" blade with thick wooden scales secured to the full tang by five brass rivets and a heavy cast brass finger guard. The impressive 11" blade, is 6mm thick and 8.5 cm wide at its broadest point. Although functional, this Bowie was probably not intended to be carried and is correctly without a scabbard.

In the early 20th century, the cutlery industry in Sheffield experienced significant transformation and growth. Renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship, Sheffield cutlers continued to excel in producing precision tools, knives, and specialized cutlery. The industry embraced advancements in manufacturing techniques and materials, blending traditional handcraft with emerging technology. Sheffield cutlers also expanded their reach globally, supplying both everyday items and bespoke pieces to international markets. During this period, the city solidified its reputation as a global center for cutlery excellence, driven by its skilled workforce and innovative practices.
