This is the French yataghan curved bayonet as fitted to the Chassepot M1866 rifle.
A good straight blade with the classic curve, sound point and edge and minimal corrosion, with steel cross-guard and quillon, t26779 stamped on the cross guard which is the matching No for the musket that this bayonet was made for. Ribbed brass handle with working but stiff release button. Marked “Tulle Aout.” (August). 1871 for the place and time of manufacture, placing it towards the end of the Franco-Prussian War.
The front of the cross-piece bears additional stamps consisting of numerals and symbols.
A classic sword bayonet nearly 150 years old.
