*German, WW2 - c.1939,  First Pattern Third Reich Luftwaffe AK39 “Armbandkompaß” Wrist Compass by Kadlec,, with Original Leather Strap*

An original Second World War German Luftwaffe AK39 wrist navigation compass (Armbandkompaß), retaining its original straps and desirable early-pattern black Bakelite casing. The reverse retains its original factory identification disc stamped:

Armbandkompaß
Bauart : Kadlec
Baumuster : AK 39
Werk Nr : 8319
Anfordez : Fl 23235
Hersteller : jlr

The designation “AK39” refers to Armbandkompaß Model 1939, indicating the pattern introduced in 1939 rather than the exact year of manufacture. This particular example was likely produced during the early war period, circa 1939–1943. The black Bakelite First Pattern variants are generally considered earlier production than the later white-bodied wartime examples.

This is the sought-after First Pattern AK39, identifiable by its black ribbed Bakelite bezel and enclosed compass body, differing from the later white-bodied models with transparent map-reading apertures. The compass retains its original fluid-filled rotating dial with yellow directional numerals, red north indicator, central magnified viewing lens, and luminous alignment line beneath the crystal.

The “Fl 23235” marking denotes Luftwaffe aviation equipment procurement, while the wartime manufacturer code “jlr” corresponds to the Kadlec instrument works of Prague, operating under German wartime control following the occupation of Czechoslovakia.

These wrist compasses were issued primarily to Luftwaffe aircrew, Fallschirmjäger, and specialist personnel for emergency navigation and survival use.

Approx. Measurements – Compass body diameter: approx. 5.2 cm. Overall length including strap: approx. 28 cm.

History Note:
The AK39 Armbandkompaß became a standard personal navigation instrument of the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. First Pattern black Bakelite examples are increasingly sought after by collectors due to their early-war manufacture, distinctive construction, and direct association with Luftwaffe flight and airborne equipment.

*Condition*
Overall good original wartime condition. The black Bakelite casing and ribbed bezel show expected service wear, scratches, and small areas of rubbing consistent with age and use. Dial markings remain clear and attractive beneath the crystal. Compass appears to retain damping fluid, though untested for navigational accuracy. The original leather strap remains fitted with period stitching and riveted attachments, showing age wear, creasing, and light verdigris to metal fittings. Rear markings remain clear and legible throughout. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
