*German, WW2 - Dated 1938, Third Reich Sudetenland Medal (Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1. Oktober 1938)*
An original Third Reich Sudetenland Medal commemorating the annexation of the Sudetenland into Nazi Germany following the events of October 1938. Constructed in bronze-toned metal, the obverse depicts two stylised male figures standing upon a pedestal bearing a national eagle and swastika emblem, one figure carrying a flag while assisting another breaking free from chains, symbolising the Nazi regime’s propaganda concept of the “liberation” of ethnic Germans in the Sudeten territories.
The reverse bears the inscription “EIN VOLK • EIN REICH • EIN FÜHRER” surrounding the centrally positioned date “1 OKTOBER 1938”, framed by four swastika devices around the outer edge. The medal retains its original suspension loop and hanging ring.
Approx. Measurements – Medal diameter: 3.2 cm.
History Note:
The Sudetenland Medal was instituted on 18 October 1938 following Germany’s annexation of the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia after the Munich Agreement. It was awarded to German military personnel, civil officials, and others involved in the occupation and political integration of the territory. A later-issued Prague Castle clasp denoted participation in the subsequent occupation of the remainder of Czechoslovakia in March 1939.
