*German, Third Reich Period, Hitler Youth / Regional Youth Organisation Side Drum by Lefima – Bavarian Blue & White Pattern*

An original historical German military-style parade snare drum (Marschtrommel / side drum) manufactured by the renowned German percussion company Lefima (Leberecht Fischer, Markneukirchen). The dimensions conform closely to the lightweight field and youth marching drums commonly utilized by German youth organizations, parade bands, and auxiliary formations during the 1930s and 1940s.

The drum features a naturally aged brass shell mounted between wooden hoops retaining their original blue-and-white repeating triangular “sawtooth” parade pattern. While red-and-white examples are more commonly encountered on standard Hitler Youth drums, the blue-and-white configuration is strongly associated with Bavarian regional formations and is also seen on certain Marine-Hitlerjugend (Naval Hitler Youth) instruments.

The shallow shell profile made these drums substantially lighter than full military field drums, allowing them to be comfortably carried by younger parade members using a shoulder belt or hooked suspension system. The drum retains its original upper carrying bracket fitted with a period cloth-wrapped carrying loop.

Unlike earlier rope-tension folk drums, this example utilizes the more advanced threaded steel tension rod system employed on period military and parade percussion instruments. The original butterfly-wing snare tension adjuster survives intact, together with the internal wire snare assembly and springs mounted beneath the lower skin.

The brass shell retains a deep untouched patina throughout and is engraved “Lefima” in the firm’s distinctive period cursive trademark. Lefima, founded in 1861 in Markneukirchen, was among Germany’s premier percussion manufacturers and supplied instruments to military, civic, and youth organisations throughout the pre-war and wartime eras.

Approx. Measurements: 37.5 cm diameter x 17 cm shell depth.

History Note:
Marching drums formed an important component of ceremonial and parade culture within Third Reich Germany. Hitler Youth formations, regional youth organisations, school cadet groups, and paramilitary bands all maintained drum corps used during rallies, sporting events, military displays, and political ceremonies.

Blue-and-white drums such as this are particularly associated with Bavarian regional styling, reflecting the traditional state colours and geometric heraldic patterns of Bavaria. Similar colour schemes were also occasionally employed by naval youth and maritime-associated marching formations.

Lefima instruments were highly regarded for their quality and durability, and original surviving wartime-period examples retaining their factory finishes and fittings are increasingly scarce.

*Condition*
Presented in untouched original condition with excellent period character throughout. The brass shell displays heavy age patination, oxidation spotting, and handling wear consistent with long-term storage and genuine use. The painted wooden hoops retain substantial original blue-and-white finish with noticeable paint loss, crazing, scratches, and edge wear throughout. Both drum skins remain present but show staining, age darkening, surface wear, and areas of deterioration. Internal snare springs survive, though one section is partially loose/distorted. Steel tension rods and fittings display surface rust and oxidation throughout. The original cloth-bound carrying loop survives but is fragile and heavily worn from age. Overall, a highly displayable and authentic period German marching drum retaining strong untouched originality. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
