~ Early 20th Century Chromolithographic Print of ‘The Gallant Sailor’ ~
~ After Frank Dadd ~
A fine early 2oth century chromolithographic print titled ‘The Gallant Sailor’ after a painting made in 1910 by the British painter Frank Dadd (1851–1929).
The image shows a sailor walking arm in arm with a young lady in a port town scene.
The original signature of Frank Dadd can be seen in the bottom right hand corner with the date of 1910.
The print is marked ‘Sir joseph Causton & Sons Limited, Printers London’ to the bottom right hand corner.
There is other text below the image but this is obscured by the frame.
The print is presented in a glazed ornate gilt frame.
~ Dimensions ~
The image measures 41cm (16 inches) by 56cm (22 inches).
The frame measures 59cm (23 ¼ inches) by 74cm (29 inches).
It weighs 4.6 Kg
~ Condition ~
There is a little wear to the edge of the image in parts due to the friction against the frame.
The print is otherwise in very good condition.
The frame is in good order with no major problems.
~ Frank Dadd ~
Frank Dadd was born on the 28th March 1851 in London. He studied at the Royal College of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won a Silver medal for drawing from life. He commenced black and white work in about 1882 and worked as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News from 1878-1884 and then at The Graphic.
He specialised in historical and genre paintings, and in addition illustrated several books including “All is not gold that glitters”, “The Flag Beer and Skittles”, “The Captain of the Troop”, “Follow the drum”, “Coaching days and Coaching ways”, and Baring Goulds “The Broom Squire” and “Types of the Army and Navy”.
He was honoured to have his paintings chosen for exhibition at the Royal Academy from 1878. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-colours in 1884 and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1888.
He lived at Wallington in Surrey and later at Teignmouth in Devon where he died on 7th March 1929.
