*18th–19th Century, 1-Pounder Solid Shot Small Cannonball, Inert*

A substantial and visually attractive solid spherical projectile of likely artillery association, measuring approximately 5.5cm in diameter and weighing approximately 1lb. The dimensions, weight, and lightly magnetic properties correspond broadly with small-calibre smoothbore ordnance ammunition, particularly the type of solid round shot associated with light swivel guns, falconets, and other compact defensive artillery pieces employed from the post-medieval period through the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The sphere is of solid construction and displays a heavily aged dark brown oxidised surface throughout with excellent period character. A faint circumferential line remains visible around the body and may represent a surviving casting seam from manufacture, potentially indicative of production within a two-part mould, although age and corrosion now obscure finer detail. No fuze aperture, filling point, or evidence of a hollow cavity is visible, supporting identification as a solid rather than explosive projectile. The item displays a light magnetic attraction, consistent with ferrous content or a mixed-material composition.

Approx. Measurements – Diameter: 5.5cm. Weight: Approximately 1lb.

History Note:
Small artillery pieces were traditionally classified by the weight of the projectile they fired rather than solely by bore diameter. A 1-pounder weapon discharged a solid spherical shot comparable to this example. Such light ordnance was employed aboard naval vessels, merchant ships, fortifications, and in field service, where compact artillery fulfilled defensive roles against personnel, rigging, and other close-range targets. Without archaeological provenance or associated finds, however, precise attribution cannot be stated with certainty.

*Condition*
Heavy age-related oxidation, pitting, and surface corrosion throughout with deep dark brown patination. Small traces of red surface coating remain visible and may represent old preservation treatment, inventory marking, or later paint application. No visible foundry or inspection marks noted. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
