Description

*19th Century Bamboo Sword Stick with Stag Antler Handle, Concealed Blade Cane*

A fine 19th century bamboo sword stick, constructed as a walking cane with concealed steel blade. The stick is made from natural bamboo with attractive mottled colouring, fitted with a brass ferrule to the tip and a brass collar at the handle. The grip is formed from a natural stag antler section, threaded onto the tang, giving a very organic and characterful appearance typical of Victorian sporting or gentleman’s sword sticks.

The blade is of slender form with flattened diamond section, designed for thrusting, and remains straight and well-fitted within the cane. The cane unscrews cleanly at the handle to reveal the full length blade. This is a well-balanced example with a particularly decorative natural finish to both the bamboo shaft and antler handle.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 69 cm. Overall length (blade): 74 cm. Overall length (walking stick): 85 cm.

Historical Note:
Sword sticks were popular throughout the 19th century, particularly during the Victorian period, when gentlemen often carried canes as part of everyday dress. Concealed blade canes provided a discreet means of self-defence and were made in a wide variety of styles, ranging from simple working examples to high-quality pieces with horn, antler, ivory, or silver mounts. Bamboo shaft examples such as this were especially popular due to their strength, light weight, and natural appearance.

*Condition*
Good overall condition for age. Blade with age patina and light surface wear but no major damage. Cane shaft solid with typical age splits to the bamboo and some surface wear. Brass fittings with age marks and minor dents. Antler handle secure with natural imperfections consistent with the material. Cane and blade fit together correctly and unscrew as intended. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
