*Blue & Gilt 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Sabre Sword and Scabbard*
The 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Sabre stands as an iconic testament to the martial history of the British military. Designed for use by the cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars, this sabre showcases a blend of elegance and functionality. Its distinctive curved blade and single-edged design allowed for swift and devastating strikes from horseback. The sabre also features a hilt adorned with a stirrup guard to protect the wielder’s hand. It was used primarily by British light dragoons and hussars, and King’s German Legion light cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars. It was also adopted by the Prussians (as the 1811 pattern or “Blücher sabre”) and used by Portuguese and Spanish cavalry.
This one is typical of the officer pattern, with engraving, blueing and gilding to the blade, Typically, officers’ swords are adorned with decorated blades, whereas troopers’ blades remain plain. 38" overall and 33.5" blade, curved single-edged blade with a large fullers on either side. Relatively small hilt (approx 10cm) with stirrup guard & langets, wire-wound grips, a plain steel backstrap. Complete with steel scabbard with two suspension rings.
*Condition*
This sabre is in excellent condition. The gilt and blue embellishments remains clear and strong, the blade is clean with no nicks or pitting. The knuckle has some discolouration rusting. The scabbard is very good condition, dents and marks commensurate with age and service, fits securely. Please see pictures as part of the condition report.
