The most famous story of St. Francis involves him taming a wolf that terrorized the town of Gubbio by killing both animals and people. Despite warnings, Francis decided to confront the wolf, believing God would protect him. Accompanied by a friar and several peasants who soon retreated, Francis encountered the charging wolf, made the Sign of the Cross, and commanded it in Christ's name to stop. The wolf became meek and lay at his feet. St. Francis negotiated peace between the wolf and the townspeople, who promised to feed it. The wolf agreed and symbolically shook Francis' hand. The wolf lived peacefully in Gubbio for two years, reminding the townspeople of St. Francis' virtues and the power of God. When it died of old age, the townspeople mourned its passing as a symbol of God's providence.
