Description

*British, 1877, Martini-Henry Pattern 1876 Socket Bayonet, Marked S.A.V. South African Volunteers, Dated 1877*

An original British Pattern 1876 socket bayonet designed for the Martini-Henry rifle. This example measures approximately 51.5 cm overall with a triangular blade of about 52 cm. It features a locking ring mechanism on the socket, designed to securely fix to the muzzle.

Stamped with the "S" with arrow mark, officially denoting the bayonet was sold out of British service prior to its subsequent issue to colonial volunteer forces. The blade stamped "S.A.V. 2 L 77", suggesting issue to the South African Volunteers in 1877. No visible broad arrow or WD acceptance mark remains, as often seen on bayonets re-issued or surplus-marked for colonial use. The blade shows honest pitting and staining consistent with age and service use. Socket retains blackened finish, possibly arsenal or colonial repainting.

The British Pattern 1876 socket bayonet, designed for the Martini-Henry rifle, was commonly referred to as the "Lunger" due to its length and was used during the Anglo-Zulu War. Triangular in shape, the bayonet was purely a stabbing weapon, with no sharp edges. Known today as the Pattern 76′, this is actually incorrect, the official name was the “Bayonet Common Long”.

A classic example of a bayonet widely used during British colonial conflicts and a desirable piece for Martini-Henry enthusiasts or collectors of Victorian military arms.

*Condition*
Blade exhibits pitting and surface staining throughout; tip intact. Socket retains original or later service blackening with minor surface wear. Mechanically complete. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
