Description

*British, 1935, Daily Dispatch Birthday Club Royal Jubilee Medal with Original Pin Suspension*

An original commemorative membership medal issued by the Daily Dispatch Birthday Club to mark the Royal Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935.

The circular medal is silvered metal and retains its original suspension loop together with the simple brass safety-pin style brooch fitting, allowing it to be worn on clothing. The obverse displays conjoined busts of King George V and Queen Mary facing left, surrounded by the legend “KING GEORGE V · QUEEN MARY.”

The reverse features a crowned rising sunburst design with surrounding scrolls reading “DAILY DISPATCH BIRTHDAY CLUB.” In the centre appears the inscription:

“FOUNDED IN THE ROYAL JUBILEE YEAR 1935.”

Approx. Measurements – Diameter: 3.2 cm.

History Note:
The Daily Dispatch was a Manchester-based newspaper established in 1900 which later became part of the Daily Mail group before being absorbed into it in 1960. Like many British newspapers of the early 20th century, it operated a children’s membership scheme known as a Birthday Club, through which young readers could register their birthdays and receive certificates, badges, or small medals.

In 1935, to coincide with the Silver Jubilee of King George V, the newspaper issued commemorative membership medals such as this example. The inclusion of the royal portraits and Jubilee reference reflects the widespread national celebrations that year, when numerous civic organisations, schools, and publications produced commemorative items for children and the public.

These medals are now collected both as British royal commemorative pieces and as examples of early newspaper promotional memorabilia.

*Condition*
The medal remains in good overall condition for its age. The silvered finish is largely intact with areas of light wear and minor surface toning consistent with handling. The suspension loop and original safety-pin style brooch fitting remain present and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
