Description

*British, 1935, King George V Silver Jubilee Commemorative Medal, Red-White-Blue Ribbon*

A British commemorative medal issued to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V, celebrating the 25th anniversary of his accession to the throne on 6 May 1910.

The obverse features a crowned shield with a cross motif flanked by laurel branches, above a ribbon bearing the motto “ASCENDED THRONE 6 MAY 1910.” The words “BRITISH MADE” appear to either side of the shield. Beneath is the inscription: “TO COMMEMORATE THE SILVER JUBILEE OF KING GEORGE V AND QUEEN MARY – MAY 6TH 1935.” The reverse depicts conjoined busts of King George V and Queen Mary with the surrounding legend “KING GEORGE V QUEEN MARY.”

The medal is suspended from a red, white and blue ribbon, representing the national colours of Britain. Pieces of this type were widely distributed during the nationwide celebrations in May 1935 and were commonly worn by schoolchildren, civic participants, and attendees of jubilee events.

Approx. Measurements – Diameter: approx. 32 mm.

History Note:
The Silver Jubilee of King George V on 6 May 1935 marked twenty-five years since the King’s accession following the death of King Edward VII in 1910. The anniversary was celebrated across Britain and the Empire with parades, public ceremonies, thanksgiving services, and the issuing of commemorative medals, badges, and souvenirs.

Alongside the official 1935 Silver Jubilee Medal awarded to selected members of the armed forces and public services, a wide range of unofficial commemorative pieces were produced for public distribution. Local authorities, schools, and manufacturers commissioned medals like this one to mark the event and to provide affordable souvenirs of the national celebration.

These medals were typically produced in white metal, pewter, or silvered base metal, rather than solid silver, and often featured patriotic ribbons in the national colours.

*Condition*
The medal shows general wear and age-related patina, with noticeable rubbing to the portrait and inscriptions consistent with handling. The rim shows minor irregularities from manufacture or age. The ribbon is present but shows fraying and wear, particularly near the fold. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
