Description

*British, 1960, Enfield L1A3 SLR Bayonet & Wilkinson Mk.5 Scabbard – Early Long Fuller Variant*

British L1A3 bayonet for the 7.62mm NATO L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), complete with its correct Mk.5 scabbard. This example represents an early production L1A3, identifiable by the long fuller blade and transitional waisted crossguard. The parkerised blade measures 20.4 cm, with an overall length of 30.2 cm. The grip is correctly marked “L1A3 9600257 F60”, with matching markings on the obverse “L1A3 9600257” accompanied by the Enfield ED mark. Additional markings include “F60” and “J over 3” on the ricasso, with the Enfield ED mark to the crossguard. The bayonet features the recessed press-stud catch, a key improvement over the earlier L1A1 pattern. The “F60” date mark indicates production in 1960, placing this firmly within the earliest L1A3 manufacture period. The number “9600257” is the NATO Stores Reference for the L1A3 bayonet, not a serial number.

The bayonet is housed in its correct Mk.5 scabbard, marked S294, the code for Wilkinson Swords, retaining its original finish and fittings.

Historical Note:
The L1A3 bayonet was officially adopted on 31 December 1958 following the introduction of the 7.62mm L1A1 SLR, replacing earlier British bayonet patterns. Designed in keeping with post-war British doctrine, it retained a short Bowie-style blade while incorporating improvements based on service experience.

One of the most significant changes from the earlier L1A1 bayonet was the introduction of a recessed press-stud, reducing the likelihood of accidental release in service. Early L1A3 bayonets, such as this example, were manufactured with a long blade fuller, a feature later shortened in the mid-1960s, resulting in the more familiar long ricasso seen on later production.

Manufacture was undertaken at RSAF Enfield (ED) and Birmingham Small Arms (B).

*Condition*
Very good overall condition. The blade retains strong original parkerised finish with light service storage wear only. Grip scales are solid and undamaged, with clear, legible markings throughout. The press-stud catch functions correctly. The scabbard remains structurally sound with consistent finish and only minor age-related marks. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
