Description

*British, 1985, EIIR Royal Navy & Merchant Services Crown Sweetheart Brooch, 9ct Gold, Pearl & Enamel – Birmingham Hallmarked (J.W. Benson Ltd)*

A finely executed Elizabeth II period Royal Navy sweetheart brooch in the traditional Naval Crown form, crafted in 9ct gold and decorated with seed pearls and coloured enamel. The alternating sterns and sails are crisply pierced, each sail panel set with graduated seed pearls, with a further row of pearls along the lower circlet. The central shield displays stylised stern window detailing in turquoise and red enamel, executed in the classic nautical palette associated with Royal Navy jewellery.

The reverse bears Birmingham hallmarks comprising anchor town mark, 375 fineness stamp for 9ct gold, script date letter “l” for 1985, and sponsor’s mark JWB. The mark corresponds to J.W. Benson Ltd, the distinguished London jewellers and Royal Warrant holders, who by the later 20th century commissioned manufacture through Birmingham workshops while continuing to produce high-quality regimental and naval jewellery under their historic name.

A quality late-20th-century example of traditional Royal Navy sweetheart jewellery produced during the reign of Elizabeth II (EIIR), reflecting the continuation of early 20th-century service jewellery traditions into the modern era.

Approx. Measurements – Width: 2.5 cm. Height: 1.1 cm.

Historical Note:
J.W. Benson Ltd was founded in 1847 and became one of Britain’s most respected jewellers and watchmakers, holding Royal Warrants during the reign of Queen Victoria and beyond. Following wartime destruction of their London factory in 1941, the firm increasingly operated as a prestigious retailer and brand, commissioning manufacture from specialist makers — many based in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter — while maintaining high production standards.

Naval crown sweetheart brooches originated in the early 20th century and were worn by wives and family members of serving naval personnel. The Naval Crown symbolises maritime supremacy and is closely associated with the Royal Navy and Merchant Services. By the 1980s, firms such as J.W. Benson continued this tradition, producing refined gold examples for presentation and personal wear during the Elizabeth II period.

*Condition*
