Description

*British, 2nd Anglo-Boer War, Queen’s South Africa Medal, 3 Clasps: Wittebergen, Transvaal, Cape Colony – Trooper B. Levene, Brabant’s Horse (South African Colonial Forces)*

A British Queen’s South Africa Medal (QSA), silver issue, awarded with three clasps: Wittebergen, Transvaal, and Cape Colony, correctly mounted on its original riband. The medal is crisply impressed to the rim “9002 TPR: B. LEVENE. BRABT: H.”, the naming sharp, evenly struck, and entirely original. The obverse displays the crowned portrait of Queen Victoria with the legend VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX, while the reverse depicts Britannia advancing with British and colonial forces, supported by naval and artillery elements. The suspension is the correct swivelling type, with all clasps period-fitted, aligned, and securely attached.

Historical Note:
The Queen’s South Africa Medal is the principal British campaign award of the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902) and is correctly classed as an Anglo-Boer War medal. Although awarded to troops serving across South Africa, all QSAs were instituted, issued, and named by the British War Office, including those awarded to colonial units. Trooper Bernard Robert Levene, service number 9002, served with Brabant’s Horse, a prominent Cape Colonial mounted unit raised in 1899 and commanded by Major-General Sir Edward Brabant. The regiment played a highly active role in mobile operations across the Cape Colony, the Orange Free State and later the Transvaal, frequently engaged in pursuit, reconnaissance, and counter-guerrilla duties. The presence of the Wittebergen clasp places Levene in the important Orange Free State operations of mid-1900, while the Transvaal and Cape Colony clasps reflect extended service across multiple theatres. Entitlement is confirmed on War Office roll WO100/237, with records also showing qualification for the King’s South Africa Medal, indicating continued service beyond 1901.

*Condition*
The medal is in very fine to extremely fine condition, retaining bright silver surfaces with minimal handling marks. All three clasps are present and well struck, with clear lettering and no distortion. The suspension functions correctly, and the medal displays extremely well overall. The ribbon appears period-correct, retaining strong colour, with some loose threads visible at the upper edge consistent with age. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
