Description

*British, c.1837–1860, Baleen-Whalebone Ringwork Walking Stick, L-Shaped Handle*

A rare and attractive early Victorian walking stick, constructed with a dark L-shaped handle and a tapering shaft decorated throughout with closely set alternating rings of natural dark and pale material, traditionally described in the trade as whalebone or baleen ringwork. The stick has a particularly striking striped appearance along almost its full length, with the darker handle contrasting well against the lighter and darker banded shaft. The handle is of simple angular form with a slightly flared grip, giving the piece a restrained but distinctive mid-19th century appearance. The lower terminal retains its original ferrule area, now worn and reduced with age.

Approx. Measurements – Overall length: 88.5 cm. Handle length: 9.5 cm.

Historical Note
Walking sticks of this type were popular during the early to mid-19th century, when exotic and organic materials such as baleen, horn and whale-derived products were used in the manufacture of fashionable personal accessories. Sticks with banded or ring-turned decoration are encountered in a range of qualities, but examples with this strong alternating striped effect and pleasing untouched surface are far less common. The present example sits comfortably in the early Victorian period and reflects the taste for practical yet visually distinctive gentlemen’s canes of the era.

Condition Report
The stick displays honest age and use throughout. The handle has surface wear, light scratches and rubbing consistent with age. The banded shaft remains structurally very presentable but shows minor scattered shrinkage cracks, to some of the applied ring elements, as visible in the close-up photographs. There is wear and some loss around the lower tip/ferrule area. It remains an appealing and scarce period walking stick with strong display presence. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
