Description

*British, c. 1876–1889, Pattern 1876 Martini-Henry Socket Bayonet*

A genuine British Pattern 1876 socket bayonet, originally designed for use with the Martini-Henry rifle. This example features the distinctive triangular-section blade with shallow fullers on each face, measuring approximately 52.3 cm overall. The socket retains its original locking ring and correct mortise cut-out.

Markings include a clear British broad arrow acceptance stamp on the blade, along with a crown over inspector letter (likely "B"), a small cross proof mark, and an "S" sub-inspector or steel batch mark below. Additional socket markings include an "X" bend test proof, various inspection numerals ("2", "16", "7", "9"), and a "G" stamp believed to denote an inspector or factory sub-inspector code. The presence of opposing broad arrows confirms that this example was officially "sold out of service" by the British military, adding an extra layer of authenticity and historical interest.

The British Pattern 1876 socket bayonet, designed for the Martini-Henry rifle, was commonly referred to as the "Lunger" due to its length and was used during the Anglo-Zulu War. Triangular in shape, the bayonet was purely a stabbing weapon, with no sharp edges. Known today as the Pattern 76′, this is actually incorrect, the official name was the “Bayonet Common Long”.

*Condition*
Condition is good overall, showing honest age-related patina, scattered pitting and oxidation, with no major deformations. The socket mechanism remains intact and functional. A well-marked and collectable example of Victorian British military equipment, representative of the type widely used during the late 19th century and in colonial campaigns. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
