An attractive and highly characterful British Martini-Henry Mk II Carbine manufactured at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield, retaining its original cleaning and displaying extensive Victorian military inspection, proof and Volunteer service markings throughout. Chambered in the classic obsolete .577/.450 Martini-Henry calibre, the carbine remains mechanically functional and cocks and dry-fires correctly.

This example shows evidence of a long and evolving military life. The action carries numerous Crown over Enfield inspection stamps together with Victorian proof marks and repeated opposed broad-arrow “sold out of service” stamps indicating official disposal from government stores after military use. Particularly noteworthy is the S-X marking on the chamber area, signifying installation of the strengthened extractor modification. This upgrade programme was introduced to improve extraction reliability and was applied to earlier Martini-Henry rifles and carbines returned for arsenal updating.

The receiver date is now very faint, with only the final figure “2” remaining clearly visible. At first glance this could be interpreted as either 1882 or 1892. However, when considered alongside the documented S-X strengthened extractor modification programme introduced from 1885 onward, together with the apparent Mk II receiver designation, an original manufacture date of c.1882 is considered the most likely interpretation. This date sits at the tail end of documented Mk II production (1877–1882) and immediately prior to later arsenal upgrade programmes. Such a chronology creates a coherent service history whereby an early Martini-Henry carbine was manufactured in the early 1880s, subsequently upgraded following introduction of the strengthened extractor modification, later transferred into Volunteer service in 1894, and ultimately sold out of military service, as indicated by the opposed broad-arrow disposal marks.

The butt disc is especially interesting and reads: "3 / 1894 / I.V.LNK.A / 661". This is believed to denote issue to the 1st Volunteer Battalion, King’s Liverpool Regiment, Company A, with a rack or inventory number 661 and a likely March 1894 issue date. Volunteer-marked Martini carbines are desirable survivors and provide a direct link to Britain’s late Victorian auxiliary military system.

The stock retains its original Enfield roundel incorporating Crown / ENFIELD / WD Broad Arrow, together with secondary markings including II / 2. Numerous additional inspection marks remain present across the barrel, action, sight, trigger guard and underlever, including VR Crown over E stamps, proof pennants, WD marks and Enfield inspection numbers. The rear sight remains present and marked, while the original cleaning rod is retained.

History Note:
The Martini-Henry Mk II formed one of the principal service rifles and carbines of the British Army during the late Victorian era and saw widespread use across the British Empire. Following hard military use, many examples underwent arsenal refurbishment and upgrading programmes designed to improve reliability and extend service life. Later, as newer magazine rifles entered service, substantial numbers were transferred to Volunteer battalions and auxiliary formations throughout Britain before eventual sale out of service. The multiple opposed broad-arrow disposal marks and Volunteer butt disc on this example preserve that complete military journey.

*Condition*
Good untouched service condition displaying honest age and military wear throughout. Action cocks and dry-fires correctly. The metalwork retains an even aged patina with scattered pitting, surface oxidation and handling marks entirely consistent with long military and Volunteer service use. Woodwork shows expected service wear including dents, scratches and age-related shrinkage, with cracking visible around the butt tang area. The butt disc is fitted upside down. The original ramrod remains present. The barrel appears shortened from original military specification during its service life, resulting in a non-standard fore-end and muzzle arrangement whilst preserving the piece's evident long-service character. Extensive inspection, proof and ownership marks remain visible throughout.

The breech area additionally exhibits a pronounced relieved cut at the barrel/action junction creating a visible narrow open gap at the rear barrel shoulder. This does not appear to represent a standard Enfield manufacturing feature and is most likely associated with historical armourer fitting work undertaken during re-barrelling or barrel re-indexing, where material was relieved to achieve correct timing and alignment. Given the rifle’s documented S-X upgrade and later Volunteer service history, such intervention would be entirely consistent with a long military working life and repeated arsenal maintenance. It remains an unusual characteristic and forms part of the rifle’s individual history and service evolution. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
