Description

*British, c.1900, "The City Whistle Patent" Nickel-Plated Whistle with Cord*

A fine example of an early 20th-century "The City Whistle Patent" whistle, measuring approximately 8cm in length including the loop. This cylindrical whistle is crafted from nickel-plated brass and bears the clear stamped mark "The City Whistle Patent" to the body.

Originally developed as a general-purpose service whistle, it was widely used by police, military, and city officials around the turn of the century. The design features two rectangular side air vents and a distinctively shaped mouthpiece. This example retains its original hanging cord, which is an uncommon survival.

Historical Note:
The “City Whistle” design, with its distinctive rectangular side windows and tubular body, was popular from the 1880s up to around the 1920s, before being replaced by General Service Whistles (GSW) and newer police models. The arched "The City Whistle Patent" stamp on this example matches late Victorian to Edwardian production, and the simple loop and overall finish point to a pre-1920 manufacture, most likely circa 1895–1910.

*Condition*
The whistle remains in good vintage condition with age-related wear, including surface marks and some small areas of tarnishing and minor rusting near the loop. The stamped lettering is clear and legible. The original cord is intact but shows signs of fraying and age darkening. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
