Description

*British, c1804, Royal Navy 1804 Pattern Cutlass, Crown GR Inspection Mark, Early Napoleonic Issue*

Original British Royal Navy cutlass of the regulation 1804 Pattern, the standard naval boarding weapon of the early 19th century and widely used during the Napoleonic Wars. The sword has the classic straight single-edged blade with rounded spear point, iron stirrup hilt, and ribbed iron grip typical of regulation naval issue weapons of this period.

The hilt consists of a sheet-iron bowl guard with forward quillon, integral knuckle bow and ribbed iron grip, with the correct slot at the rear for a sword knot or wrist strap. The grip retains its original peened tang construction at the pommel, consistent with early 19th century manufacture. The guard shows the expected hand-finished character and hammer texture seen on early production examples.

The blade is of flat section with rounded point and remains well-defined with a good edge profile. The ricasso is struck with a clear Crown over GR inspection mark, confirming manufacture during the reign of King George III (1760–1820).  The spine also bears stamped characters - reading IXXI / XXI, probably a rack or store number, a feature commonly encountered on naval cutlasses of this period.

A very honest untouched example showing age, service wear and original surface throughout.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 72 cm. Overall length: 84.5 cm.

History Note:
The 1804 Pattern cutlass was introduced for the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars as a strong and easily produced boarding weapon intended for close-quarters fighting at sea. It replaced earlier hanger and figure-of-eight guard cutlasses and became the standard issue naval sword during the period of Britain’s naval dominance under King George III.

Cutlasses of this type were carried by sailors, marines and boarding parties during actions against French and Spanish warships, privateers and pirates, and were used extensively in shipboard combat, amphibious landings and prize taking. Their heavy blades and simple iron hilts made them particularly suited to the harsh conditions of naval service.

Inspection marks such as the Crown / GR stamp were applied at government stores to confirm acceptance into service, while additional numbers and file marks were often added for shipboard rack identification or dockyard inventory control. Surviving examples frequently show such markings, reflecting long service use.

*Condition*
Excellent original condition for its age, with dark patina and areas of surface pitting consistent with long service and storage. Blade retains a defined edgewith nicks commensurate with age and service. Hilt solid and tight, with expected age wear. Markings remain visible on ricasso and spine. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
