Description

*British, Cold War - c.1974, L10A1 Artillery Shell Case Primer & Integral Flash Tube ("Military Poppy Holder") – ROF Chorley Marked – Inert*

An original British Cold War era L10A1 artillery shell case primer assembly, complete with its integral perforated flash vent tube and retaining clear Royal Ordnance markings. Constructed in brass with a threaded primer base and long cylindrical vent tube pierced by multiple ignition apertures, this component formed part of the ignition system used within British artillery ammunition. The elongated vent tube distributed ignition flame evenly through the propellant charge, ensuring reliable and consistent firing performance.

The base is clearly marked L10A1 BN 71 OOO 568 CY 2/74, with CY identifying manufacture or assembly at Royal Ordnance Factory Chorley, and 2/74 indicating February 1974 production. Measuring approximately 13cm in length, this example corresponds closely with known British L10A1 primer dimensions and represents an interesting surviving piece of Cold War artillery equipment.

Beyond its original military role, these perforated primer tubes later gained an unofficial collector nickname as "Military Poppy Holders." The regularly spaced vent holes conveniently accept the wire stems of remembrance poppies, allowing multiple poppies to be displayed together. As a result, many surviving examples today are collected both as technical ordnance relics and as distinctive remembrance display pieces.

Approx. Measurements – Overall length: 13cm. Base diameter: 3.6cm.

History Note:
British artillery ammunition relied upon specialised primer systems to transmit ignition from the primer cap through the cartridge case and into the propellant charge itself. The perforated flash tube design allowed ignition flame to disperse through multiple points along its length, providing more even and predictable burning characteristics. Produced throughout the Cold War period, components such as this formed part of Britain's extensive Royal Ordnance ammunition system and saw service across a variety of artillery platforms.

The later adoption of these primer assemblies by collectors as remembrance poppy displays has given them a second identity, and they are now often encountered under the collector term "Military Poppy Holder" — a practical and rather fitting reuse of a once purely functional military component.

*Condition*
Good used condition with age-related wear, handling marks and patination throughout. Light surface wear and minor oxidation present consistent with storage and service use. Markings remain clear and legible, and the threaded base remains intact. Completely inert display piece. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
