Description

*British, Coldstream/Scots Guardsman Bearskin*

A rare example worn by the Coldstream Guards, one of the oldest regiments in the British Army, featuring an internal wicker frame, leather sweatband, and a gilt brass graduated chin chain with a leather backing. It is fitted with the Coldstream plume. This piece includes its original paper label, indicating it was officially decommissioned from service by HQ 1st Battalion Scots Guards in 2000.

This iconic ceremonial headpiece, is known as a bearskin cap. Traditionally made from the fur of the Canadian black bear, it has a tall, cylindrical shape and a deep, lustrous black appearance. The bearskin is derived from mitre caps worn by grenadier units in the 17th and 18th centuries and was initially exclusive to grenadiers. Its use was extended to other military units after the Battle of Waterloo in the 19th century. Although bearskins were still used in combat during the mid-19th century, by the 20th century they had become reserved for ceremonial and parade dress only.

Typically the Coldstream Guards wear the red plume on the right. The Scots Guards don't wear a plume. As the label suggests this was last used by the Scots Guards we presume the plume/hackle was added later.
