Description

*British, Early 19th Century, India Pattern “Brown Bess” Flintlock Musket – Jaipur Armoury Release Marked – Obsolete Calibre*

An original and highly evocative India Pattern Brown Bess flintlock musket, retaining classic Napoleonic-era form together with later Jaipur Armoury release markings linking the piece to the famous Rajasthan royal arsenal dispersals of the 20th century. This example follows the well-known India Pattern configuration adopted by the British military during the late 18th and early 19th centuries and widely used throughout the Napoleonic Wars.

The musket retains its full-length walnut stock, iron barrel, flintlock mechanism, brass furniture, sling swivels, and ramrod. The barrel measures approximately 99 cm (39 inches), with an overall length of approximately 140 cm, matching the regulation dimensions associated with the India Pattern Brown Bess series. The shorter 39 inch barrel distinguished these later muskets from earlier Long Land and Short Land Pattern examples and reflected Britain’s move toward simplified mass wartime production.

Stamped to the barrel is the Jaipur Armoury release marking “JPR / EXR / 1 622.” These marks were applied to historic arms released from the famous Jaipur and Jaigarh Fort armoury stores during the large-scale export programmes of the later 20th century. “JPR” denotes Jaipur, while “EXR” is an export or external release inventory designation, with the following numerals representing the individual registration number assigned during cataloguing. Jaipur armoury-marked muskets have become highly collectible due to their direct association with the enormous historic Indian state arsenals where many weapons remained untouched for generations.

Additional proof and inspection marks are present on the barrel, including a Crown over “CP” and Crown over “V.” The Crown over “V” is the traditional London Gunmakers’ Company “Viewed” inspection mark, while the Crown over “CP” is a commercial proof or contractor inspection mark commonly encountered on privately manufactured military arms and export muskets of the period. A further worn device mark is also visible, although now too indistinct for definitive attribution.

The musket displays the characteristic simplified military architecture of the India Pattern series, including brass trigger guard, brass side plate, brass buttplate, iron ramrod, and robust plain stock designed for practical service use. These muskets became the standard British infantry arm during the Napoleonic Wars and also saw extensive service across the British Empire and colonial territories.

Approx. Measurements – Barrel length: 99 cm. Overall length: 140 cm.

History Note:
The India Pattern Brown Bess became Britain’s principal military flintlock musket during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Originally influenced by muskets produced for service in India, the simplified pattern was officially adopted for widespread British military issue due to its lower manufacturing cost and ease of production during wartime expansion. Vast quantities were produced by private contractors under Board of Ordnance supervision, with many later remaining in colonial and princely state arsenals across India. The Jaipur armoury releases of the 1960s–1980s introduced many of these long-stored historic weapons onto the collectors’ market.

*Condition*
A well-aged and untouched example showing overall wear, oxidation, pitting, surface corrosion, handling marks, and age-related staining throughout. The lock appears externally complete but the trigger does not currently move. Flint absent. Barrel internally uninspected beyond visible muzzle view. Brass furniture displays attractive age patina and wear. The stock remains generally solid with scattered dents, scratches, old marks, and age-related imperfections throughout. Ramrod present. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

A very atmospheric Jaipur Armoury Brown Bess musket with strong Napoleonic-era character and excellent display presence.
