Description

*British, Early–Mid 19th Century, Thomason Pattern Double-Action Barrel Corkscrew*

A substantial early–mid 19th-century double-action barrel corkscrew of the well-known Thomason pattern, measuring approximately 25 cm in overall length with an 8.5 cm wide turned bone T-handle fitted with a suspension ring. Constructed with a heavy brass barrel, steel worm, and the characteristic male-and-female threaded mechanism allowing the cork to be drawn smoothly by continuous clockwise rotation. The brass barrel is lathe-turned with decorative bands and retains an applied royal arms cartouche bearing the word “PATENT”, flanked by the lion and unicorn beneath a crown, a feature long associated with this form of corkscrew. Originally fitted with an internal dusting brush housed within the barrel, now absent, as commonly encountered on surviving examples.

Historical Note:
The double-action barrel corkscrew was introduced in the early years of the 19th century and quickly became the most celebrated and influential corkscrew design of its time. The original patent for this mechanism expired in 1816, after which the pattern was widely produced by numerous makers, particularly in Birmingham and Sheffield. From this point onward, corkscrews of this type continued to be made using the established design, with royal arms and “PATENT” markings often retained as marks of quality and tradition.

*Condition*
Good overall condition, with pleasing aged patination to the brass barrel and surface wear consistent with age and use. The turned bone handle shows expected age-related discolouration and minor marks. The original dusting brush, formerly housed within the barrel, is now absent, as commonly encountered. The steel worm shows oxidation consistent with age. The mechanism operates correctly. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
