*British, Grenadier Guards Colours – Hand-Embroidered Miniature Queen’s Colour (Bullion Work), Battle Honours Display Panel*
A beautifully hand-embroidered miniature representation of the Queen’s Colour of the Grenadier Guards, measuring approximately 22 cm x 15.8 cm (excluding fringe). Produced as a regimental-quality presentation, this example features a red silk/wool ground with richly worked gold bullion wire embroidery, including the Union Flag canton, the St Edward’s Crown, the Royal Cypher “E II R”, and the flaming grenade emblem of the regiment.
The surface is fully decorated with meticulously embroidered battle honour scrolls, rendered in gold bullion with black thread titles, arranged in the traditional two-column Guards format. The piece retains its original gold fringe.
This type of embroidery was typically produced by regimental outfitters or military tailors (e.g., Firmin & Sons, Hobson & Sons) for officers, veterans, or presentation purposes. It remains an attractive and authentic piece of post-war Grenadier Guards regimental craftsmanship.
Historical Note:
The Queen’s Colour is one of the two Colours carried by each battalion of the Grenadier Guards, traditionally featuring the Union Flag and the Sovereign’s cypher. The Grenadier Guards — the senior regiment of the Guards Division — possess one of the longest and most distinguished lists of battle honours in the British Army, ranging from Tangier 1680 and Namur 1695 through the Peninsula, Waterloo, the Crimean War, colonial campaigns, the Great War, and major theatres of the Second World War, including Dunkirk, Mareth, Anzio, and the Gothic Line. The presence of the E II R cypher dates this piece firmly to the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1953–2022).
*Condition*
The embroidery remains bright and well-preserved, with the gold bullion wire crisp and retaining good colour. The fringe is complete and untangled. There is minor age toning to the Union Flag canton. No losses to the bullion scrolls or major structural issues. Presents very well for display. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
