Description

*British, Inter-war, HM Submarine K16 – Original Photograph*

Original Photograph of Inter-War Submarine K16. This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 20.3cm x 12.8cm

HMS K16 was a K-class submarine built by William Beardmore and Company at Dalmuir. Laid down in June 1916 and commissioned on 13 April 1918, she experienced one notable incident—a sudden dive in Gare Loch due to hydroplane failure—but surfaced safely. K16 was paid off on 12 December 1920, sold on 22 August 1924, and resold in September 1924 in Charlestown.

The submarine measured 338 feet in length, with a beam of 26 feet 6 inches and a draught of 20 feet 11 inches. She displaced 1,800 long tons surfaced and 2,600 long tons submerged, powered by two oil-fired boilers driving steam turbines (10,500 shp) for surface travel and four electric motors for underwater propulsion, with an additional 800 hp diesel engine for auxiliary power. K16 could reach 24 knots on the surface and 9–9.5 knots submerged, operate at a depth of up to 150 feet, and cover 80 nautical miles underwater at 2 knots.

Her armament included ten 18-inch torpedo tubes (with a mix of bow, midship, and deck-mounted tubes), two 4-inch deck guns, and a 3-inch anti-aircraft gun, manned by a complement of 59 officers and ratings.
