*British, Late WW1, RAF Pilot's Wings, Sweetheart Brooch, Enamelled Gilt*
A charming early RAF sweetheart brooch, beautifully enamelled and dating to the dawn of the world’s first independent air force.
A fine Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, gilt metal with blue, red and white enamel detailing. The design takes the form of the RAF pilot’s wings, with a central blue enamel roundel bearing the gold monogram “RAF”, surmounted by a King’s Crown, flanked by white enamel wings. The reverse is plain gilt metal with a simple horizontal pin-back fitting. Measures 5.4cm wide x 1.9cm tall.
Historical Note:
This brooch dates to the immediate post-WWI period, around 1918–1920, when the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) had just merged to form the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918. The design closely mirrors the official RAF pilot’s brevet, introduced at the same time. Such sweetheart brooches were privately purchased items, often presented by serving airmen to wives, mothers, or girlfriends as tokens of pride and affection. Produced by jewellers in silver, gilt metal, or occasionally gold, they remain highly collectable symbols of Britain’s earliest independent air force.
*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilding and enamel, with some rubbing and enamel loss visible to the wing tips and minor wear on the crown. The reverse shows typical age-related surface marks and retains its original pin-back fitting, which remains sound. No maker’s marks are present.
