*British, March 1899 Dated, Pattern 1885 Cavalry Trooper’s Sword – Boer War Period*

An original British late-Victorian Pattern 1885 Cavalry Trooper’s Sword retaining the characteristic steel bowl hilt pierced with the traditional Maltese-cross motif associated with British cavalry swords of the late nineteenth century. The sword bears a March 1899 inspection or acceptance date, placing it immediately prior to the outbreak of the Second Boer War and firmly within the final years of Queen Victoria’s reign.

The sword measures approximately 96.5cm overall, with an 82.7cm blade, and weighs approximately 2.5lbs. The blade displays the expected broad single-fullered profile with a gentle cavalry sabre curve terminating in a spear point. Although British cavalry doctrine was gradually moving toward more thrust-orientated designs by the close of the nineteenth century, this pattern still represented a compromise between cutting and thrusting characteristics.

Ricasso markings include "3 '99", interpreted as a March 1899 inspection or issue date, together with a partially legible "... London" contractor or retailer marking. The reverse bears an "X" stamp, likely representing an inspection, proof, or bend-test mark commonly encountered on British military swords of the period.

Of  interest are the wooden grip scales, which differ from the more commonly encountered regulation chequered leather or composition grips normally associated with Pattern 1885 cavalry trooper swords. No obvious securing rivets or pins are visible, suggesting these may represent a later applied repair or replacement rather than original regulation construction. They may have been fitted during armourer refurbishment, colonial service repair, Volunteer use, or another stage in the sword’s long working life. Such non-standard alterations frequently provide evidence of prolonged military service and can make individual examples more distinctive than untouched regulation pieces.

Pattern 1885 cavalry swords remained in British service throughout the final decade of the nineteenth century and older stocks frequently continued in use alongside newer patterns, often receiving repeated inspection and refurbishment rather than immediate replacement.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 82.7 cm. Overall length: 96.5 cm.

History Note:
Introduced during a period of changing cavalry doctrine, the Pattern 1885 represented one of the British Army’s attempts to modernise mounted weapons while retaining practical battlefield versatility. Experience gained in imperial campaigns throughout the late Victorian era highlighted both strengths and limitations of cavalry sword design, resulting in continued refinements and experimentation. Many surviving examples saw long service lives and later refurbishment, making non-regulation repairs and alterations an important part of their individual histories.

*Condition*
Good untouched service condition displaying honest age and military wear throughout. Steel surfaces retain an even aged patina with expected areas of darkening, handling wear and age-related marks. The blade remains well defined with edge and point present. The bowl guard displays expected service wear and age. The wooden grip scales show wear and represent an unusual feature of the piece. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
