Description

*British, Mid-20th Century, British Legion Enamel Membership Lapel Badge – Numbered P/O/65774 – J.R. Gaunt London*

An original British Legion membership lapel badge by the renowned insignia maker J.R. Gaunt of London, featuring the classic pre-Royal British Legion design with blue enamel title scroll and central lion’s head device. This attractive veteran's association badge displays the wording “BRITISH LEGION” in gilt lettering around a white-metal lion head motif and retains its original vertical pin fastening to the reverse. The rear is maker marked “J.R. GAUNT LONDON” and stamped with membership serial P/O65774, identifying it as an officially issued membership example rather than a commercially produced souvenir piece.

Approx. Measurements – Height: 2.5 cm. Width: 2.4 cm.

History Note:
The British Legion was formed in 1921 through the amalgamation of several ex-servicemen’s organisations, including the Comrades of the Great War and the National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers. Created in the aftermath of the First World War, the organisation aimed to support former servicemen and women through welfare assistance, employment aid and remembrance activities.

This badge represents a period before the organisation became the Royal British Legion, a title granted in 1971 following the award of a Royal Charter. The absence of the word “Royal” therefore places manufacture before this date. During the mid-20th century these numbered enamel badges served as official membership insignia and were worn on civilian jackets and lapels by veterans and supporters.

The reverse serial arrangement is particularly interesting. The “P” prefix is generally associated with badges fitted with a vertical pin style fastening, while the numbered sequence reflects individual issue allocation to members. The presence of the respected J.R. Gaunt London maker mark further confirms this as an authentic period-produced example. Gaunt was among Britain's foremost military insignia manufacturers and supplied a vast range of regimental badges, association insignia and veteran organisation pieces throughout the twentieth century.

The blue enamel remains one of the most recognisable veteran association badge styles of the era and the lion motif symbolises British strength and service.

*Condition*
Please see photographs as part of the condition report. Original pin fitting remains present and functional. Enamel survives well overall with only light age-related wear and minor edge rubbing visible. The reverse retains clear maker markings and serial number. Some light surface wear and age patina commensurate with period use.

A scarce original numbered British Legion membership badge by J.R. Gaunt, representing an evocative piece of British veteran and post-war social history.
