Description

*British, Mid-20th Century, Sheffield Bowie Hunting–Fighting Knife, with Original Leather Sheath*

A classic Sheffield-made Bowie-style knife, likely dating to the 1940s–60s and very similar in construction to marked examples by William Rodgers of Sheffield. The knife measures approximately 26cm overall with a 15cm clip-point carbon steel blade. It features a solid brass crossguard with twin peened rivets, full-tang construction, and hardwood slab grips secured with brass pins. The grip includes four hand-carved finger notches and heavy wear, suggesting extensive field or outdoor use.

The original stitched and riveted leather sheath survives, bearing the hand-inscribed mark "TAY 309" on the reverse, hinting at personal or institutional ownership — potentially linked to postwar scouts, cadets, or military surplus channels.

While unmarked, the knife closely matches known Rodgers production in both form and method.
- Brass crossguard with double peen rivets – virtually identical to known Rodgers knives.
- Full tang with pinned hardwood grips – same configuration as known Rodgers knives, even down to the grain and finish.
- Handle shape and pommel finish – strong resemblance to known mid-century Sheffield styles.
- Unmarked examples – while William Rodgers is often marked, some known wartime and postwar Sheffield production left blades unmarked, especially for export, surplus, or contract batches.

*Condition*
Blade has dark oxidation and surface pitting but retains its original shape. Guard is securely fitted, aged but stable. Grip has notable wear and a large pommel chip. Sheath is cracked and distressed with a torn belt slot, but structurally intact. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
