Description

*British, Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle-Musket Socket Bayonet, Volunteer-Marked Example, Birmingham Inspection Marks*

A British Pattern 1853 socket bayonet for use with the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-musket, retaining its original triangular blade and standard locking-ring socket. The blade has a good untouched age patina and is struck at the forte with a crown over B over 54 inspection mark, indicating Birmingham inspection or viewing. Faint traces of the manufacturer’s name are present but now too worn to read with certainty.

The socket carries additional issue or ownership markings, reading approximately V over L / II / 2 over  325, or similar, which are consistent with later Volunteer or militia issue markings together with a rack or inventory number. The locking ring and mortise slot remain intact and functional, and the bayonet shows the correct form associated with the standard mid-Victorian Pattern 1853 issue.

This pattern of bayonet was introduced with the famous Enfield rifle-musket and became the standard British infantry bayonet during the Crimean War period and into the later 19th century, with many examples subsequently issued to Volunteer and militia units following the expansion of Britain’s home defence forces.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 44 cm. Overall length: 52.5 cm. Socket outside diameter: 2.5 cm. Internal diameter: 2.2 cm.

History Note:
The Pattern 1853 socket bayonet accompanied the .577 calibre Enfield rifle-musket, one of the most widely used British military firearms of the 19th century. Production took place both at government factories and through Birmingham trade contractors, with blades inspected using crown over letter stamps. Following regular army use, large numbers of these bayonets were later issued to Volunteer rifle corps and militia units formed during the mid-Victorian period, and such secondary markings are commonly found on surviving examples. Volunteer-marked bayonets are of particular interest as they reflect the widespread arming of part-time defence forces during the period of invasion scare and military reform in the 1850s–1860s.

*Condition*
Untouched condition with overall age patina, surface pitting and oxidation consistent with long storage. Blade remains straight with intact tip and clear triangular form. Inspection stamp still visible, maker’s mark faint. Socket and locking ring complete with wear throughout. Unit markings on socket partly worn but readable in part. No modern alterations observed. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
