Description

*British, Pattern 1856 Pioneer Sawback Sword, Superb Brass-Hilted Example with Scabbard, Matching “8” Marks*

A very attractive and unusually well-preserved British Pattern 1856 Pioneer sawback sword, retaining its brass ribbed hilt, heavy saw-backed blade and original black leather scabbard with brass mounts. This is a particularly crisp and impressive example, with excellent visual presence and strong collector appeal.

The sword has a straight, broad single-edged blade with substantial saw teeth cut along the back, intended for pioneer or engineer use where a combination of fighting weapon and field tool was required. The brass hilt is of classic British mid-Victorian form, with ribbed cast grip, rounded pommel, D-shaped knuckle guard and forward turned quillon. The overall profile is handsome and instantly recognisable, with the bright brass hilt contrasting very well against the dark leather scabbard and steel blade.

The blade remains in very good condition for the type, with a clean bright finish, honest age staining and scattered surface marking consistent with period service and storage, but presenting far better than usually encountered. The sawback is especially sharp and well-defined, with the teeth remaining clear and even. The hilt is likewise very strong, with an appealing mellow tone to the brass and no sign of abuse or heavy wear. The scabbard is also an excellent survival, retaining its leather body and both brass mounts, and displaying extremely well alongside the sword.

The crossbar is stamped “8”, with the same “8” repeated to the scabbard throat, a very pleasing detail suggesting the sword and scabbard have remained together as a matched set. No other markings are noted.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 56.6 cm. Overall length: 69.3 cm.

History Note:
The Pattern 1856 sawback sword is among the most distinctive of British Victorian military edged weapons. Produced in the era of the Enfield rifle and the expanding specialist roles within the British Army, these heavy saw-backed swords were associated with pioneer troops and other men expected to undertake both combat and practical field duties. Their robust construction reflects this dual purpose, combining the function of a sidearm with that of a cutting and utility tool.

This sword combines the dramatic appearance of a military sawback blade with the elegant brass-hilted styling typical of mid-19th century British arms. Complete examples with scabbards are always desirable, and the present piece has excellent shelf presence.

*Condition*
A fabulous example in very appealing condition overall. The blade is bright with some scattered staining, light pitting and age wear as expected, but remains far cleaner and crisper than many surviving examples. The saw teeth are strong and well defined. The brass hilt has an attractive untouched tone with only minor handling wear and small surface marks. The scabbard is very good, retaining its leather body and brass fittings well, with only normal age-related wear and minor surface marks. A very smart, honest and highly displayable Victorian military edged weapon. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
