Description

*British, Post WW2, HM Submarine Andrew – Two Original Photographs*

Two Original Photograph of Post WW2 Submarine Andrew. This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions:
Photograph 1: 21.5cm x 13.5cm (On the reverse in pencil: "Sub Andrew last of the A class arriving at Devonport 18.12.74 to pay off for disposal. N.B. The last sub in the RN to carry a gun, this was removed at Portsmouth en route from London, where she left on 16.12.74.")
Photograph 2: 17.8cm x 12.7cm (On the front in pen: "Submarine Andrew?" and on the reverse in pencil "Andrew ?")

HMS Andrew (P423/S23/S63) was an Amphion-class submarine launched on 6 April 1946 by Vickers Armstrong. She was the first submarine to cross the Atlantic entirely submerged (May 1953) and was the last British World War II-designed submarine in service.

Andrew displaced 1,360 tonnes surfaced and 1,590 tonnes submerged, measuring 293 ft (89.5 m) long. Powered by two diesel engines and four electric motors, she reached 18.5 knots surfaced and 8 knots submerged. She was armed with ten 21-inch torpedo tubes, a 4-inch deck gun, and an Oerlikon 20 mm cannon.

In 1950, Andrew trained with the Royal Canadian Navy, returning to the UK in 1953 after a record submerged Atlantic crossing. During the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation, she was refitted with a deck gun to counter blockade runners, firing it for the last time in 1974. She was decommissioned in 1977 and scrapped.

Andrew also appeared in the 1959 film On the Beach, portraying a U.S. Navy submarine.
