Description

*British, Royal Navy Warrant Officers / Master at Arms 1827 Pattern Sword and Scabbard, by Pooley of London*

Serial number P23752 and 869-5952
Marked "Pooley Sword London" on the ricasso,  with Pooley logo on the obverse.
Marked 36 on brass hinge
785mm blade

The first Royal Navy pattern sword was created in 1805. Its elegant but impractical design was replaced in 1827 by a solid-hilt design when Masters, Mates, Master's Assistants, and Midshipmen were required to carry swords. In 1832, the Royal Navy specified that Warrant Officers' swords would be distinguished by black hilts and a stepped pommel, with Warrant Officers including Gunners, Boatswains, and Carpenters. In 1846, a standard blade was introduced for all Royal Navy officers, and the current light, single-edged straight blade was adopted in 1929.

Carried by Royal Navy Commissioned Officers. Brass hilt with Queens crown and anchor cypher with copper wire bound black shagreen grip. Plain pommel, the inside section of the guard folds on a brass hinge towards the blade, to engage with a pin on the scabbard top mount and allow the sword to rest easily against the wearer’s side when worn.  785mm single edged blade with 3/4 fuller on both sides, acid etched with Pooley Sword London and on the obverse the Pooley logo. Serial number P23752 and 869-5952 “written” on the spine. The scabbard is made of black rawhide with plated brass mounts.

*Condition*
In very good used condition.  Minor tarnishing on the blade. The sword sheaths and draw very well. The scabbard pin is broken off and the middle mount is slightly loose. Some minor wear and tear to the scabbard. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
