Description

*British (South Georgia), 26 April 1982 – Falklands War Instrument of Surrender Framed Display with Two Period Photographs, Leith Whaling Station, Lt Cdr Alfredo Astiz, HMS Plymouth & HMS Endurance*

A rare and historically important Falklands War surrender display, comprising two original period photographs flanking a central typed and signed Instrument of Surrender, documenting the capitulation of Argentine forces at Leith Whaling Station, South Georgia, on Monday 26 April 1982.

The surrender document was signed on board HMS Plymouth by Lieutenant Commander Alfredo Astiz, Argentine Navy, acting on behalf of all Argentine forces stationed at Leith, and accepted by senior Royal Navy officers representing HMS Plymouth and HMS Endurance. The display is professionally framed as a single coherent historical grouping. The left photograph shows Lt Cdr Alfredo Astiz signing the Instrument of Surrender at a table aboard HMS Plymouth, with the British officers seated opposite identified as Captain N. J. Barker RN, Commanding Officer of HMS Endurance (left), and Captain David Pentreath RN, Commanding Officer of HMS Plymouth (right). This image corresponds precisely with the officially catalogued Imperial War Museums photograph and the South Atlantic Medal Association (1982) reference for the event. The right photograph depicts Leith Whaling Station, South Georgia, with its industrial buildings and snow-covered slopes, providing direct geographical context to the surrender.

Overall framed size: approx. 77 cm × 31.7 cm. Photographs: approx. 24 cm × 19 cm each

Original Instrument of Surrender – Text (Spanish)
H.M.S. ENDURANCE
PLYMOUTH

By this means I hereby unconditionally surrender the Leith Base and the surrounding areas, in the name of the Argentine Government, to representatives of Her Britannic Majesty’s Royal Navy, on this date, Monday 26 April 1982. Due to the superiority of the enemy forces I surrender to British forces.

(Signed)
Alfredo Astiz, Teniente de Navío / Lt Cdr (ARA) (Lieutenant Commander Alfredo Astiz, Argentine Navy)
N. J. Barker, Captain, Royal Navy – HMS Endurance (Captain N. J. Barker RN, HMS Endurance)
David Pentreath, Captain, Royal Navy – HMS Plymouth (Captain David Pentreath RN, HMS Plymouth)

History Note:
The surrender of Leith Whaling Station, South Georgia, on 26 April 1982, formed part of Operation Paraquet, the British operation to retake South Georgia during the opening phase of the Falklands War. Following the Battle of Grytviken and the arrival of superior British naval and landing forces, the remaining Argentine detachment at Leith surrendered without further resistance. The surrender was executed aboard HMS Plymouth by Lieutenant Commander Alfredo Astiz, a senior Argentine naval officer, and accepted by the Commanding Officers of HMS Endurance and HMS Plymouth. This marked the first successful British recapture of territory during the conflict, delivering an important early morale and strategic victory.

*Condition*
