Description

*British Special Air Service (SAS) Brass Cap Badge — Winged Dagger “Who Dares Wins” — Original Vintage*

A finely cast original brass cap badge of the Special Air Service Regiment, featuring the iconic winged dagger flanked by stylised wings and the motto WHO DARES WINS on a scroll below. The badge retains sharp definition across the blade, grip, and feathering, with a pleasing untouched patina developed through age. Measures approx. 4cm tall x 2.2cm wide.

This badge corresponds to the early wartime design lineage of the SAS cap badge, first produced in cloth and subsequently in metal for field and dress wear by personnel of the Regiment. An authentic and evocative piece linked directly to one of Britain’s most storied elite units.

History Note:
The SAS insignia was created in 1941 when founder David Stirling held an internal design competition among the newly formed Special Air Service. Sergeant Bob Tait’s winning artwork — initially described as a winged “Sword of Damocles” but known today as the winged dagger — became the official emblem of “L” Detachment SAS Brigade. The first documented brass issue dates to 1943 while the Regiment was conducting deep-penetration raids in the North African campaign.

The badge and its motto Who Dares Wins have since become symbols of audacity and special operations excellence, carried through the re-formation of the SAS in 1947 and all major post-war actions.

*Condition*
Honest age patina and light service wear consistent with an early example. No damage, bends, or repairs. A solid and desirable original. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
