Description

*British, Victorian, Heavy Bronze Model Signal Cannon on Hardwood Naval Carriage – 17 lbs of Maritime Presence*

An exceptionally substantial and visually impressive Victorian bronze model signal cannon, mounted on its original hardwood naval-pattern trolley carriage.

Weighing approximately 17 lbs, this is far heavier and more convincing than the lightweight decorative examples commonly encountered. The bronze barrel measures 38 cm in length with a muzzle diameter of approx. 5.5 cm, cast in classic naval form with moulded reinforce rings, defined trunnions and a flared muzzle. The cascabel terminates in a rounded button, completing the authentic artillery profile. The barrel retains a rich, untouched bronze patina with natural verdigris highlights that enhance its age and character. The proportions are excellent — bold, balanced and immediately eye-catching. It is cast with a martial device depicting a rearing horseman with sword raised.

The stepped hardwood carriage follows traditional naval design, fitted with brass trunnion caps and metal-hubbed wheels. The construction is solid and confident, giving the piece real presence on a desk, mantel or display cabinet. The wheels roll freely and the barrel elevates smoothly, adding to its tactile appeal.

This is a proper Victorian study piece — and carries real weight both physically and visually.

Approx. Measurements – Barrel length: 38 cm. Muzzle diameter: approx. 5.5 cm. Carriage length: 30.5 cm. Width (including wheels): approx. 20 cm. Overall length: approx. 45.5 cm. Weight: approx. 17 lbs.

Historical Note:
During the height of Britain’s naval supremacy, bronze model cannons became highly fashionable display pieces in officers’ homes, yacht clubs, maritime businesses and country estates. They reflected pride in the Royal Navy and the wider maritime empire. Well-made examples such as this, constructed in bronze with hardwood carriage rather than later cast iron or light alloy versions, were intended to impress. The form closely mirrors full-scale naval artillery, scaled for decorative or ceremonial display.

*Condition*
Bronze barrel displays an attractive aged patina with scattered verdigris and minor surface marks consistent with honest age. No visible structural issues. Hardwood carriage remains solid and stable with age-related wear and surface marks. Wheels move freely. Barrel elevation functions correctly. A substantial, complete and highly decorative Victorian model cannon with excellent display presence. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
