Description

*British, World War II - 1942 Dated, 40mm Bofors Mark II Anti-Aircraft Gun Brass Cartridge Case – AG/C*

An original World War II British 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun brass cartridge case manufactured in 1942 for use with the famous Bofors 40×311R anti-aircraft weapon system. The Bofors gun became one of the most effective and widely used light anti-aircraft weapons of the Second World War, serving extensively with British, Commonwealth and Allied forces aboard warships, coastal installations, and mobile anti-aircraft batteries.

The headstamp retains its wartime markings and reads 40 M/M II – AG/C – 1942 – LOT 379, identifying this as a Mark II pattern case manufactured under wartime contract by Associated Green Green & Co. The case additionally displays British Broad Arrow ownership marks together with inspector and acceptance stamps, preserving its military provenance.

Approx. Measurements – Height: 31 cm. Base diameter: 6.2 cm.

History Note:
The Swedish-designed Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun became one of the most successful artillery weapons of the twentieth century. Adopted by Britain during the Second World War, it provided highly effective defence against low-flying aircraft and was mounted aboard Royal Navy vessels, merchant ships, armoured units, and fixed anti-aircraft emplacements. By 1942, wartime demand had led to vast British and Commonwealth production programmes supplying guns and ammunition across numerous theatres of war.

*Condition*
Displays original service patina and age wear throughout with areas of oxidation, handling marks, and storage wear. Primer removed leaving an open threaded primer pocket. Retains clear wartime headstamps, Broad Arrow ownership marks, and inspection stamps throughout. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
