Description

*British, WW1, 37mm VSM Pom-Pom Round — Fixed Projectile, Inert*

A World War I 37mm Pom-Pom round featuring a brass cartridge case and a fixed steel projectile with copper driving bands. The projectile is marked “V.S.M” for Vickers, Sons & Maxim, a key British munitions manufacturer active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The round stands approximately 16 cm tall with a base diameter of 4.4 cm. The projectile cannot be removed from the case but appears to partially unscrew. The base shows signs of age and wear, markings are almost impossible to discern.

Historical Note:
The 37mm Pom-Pom was an autocannon used extensively by British forces during the Boer War and into the First World War, particularly in naval and anti-aircraft roles. These rounds were originally designed to be fully functional high-explosive shells, fed into the automatic QF 1-pounder “Pom-Pom” gun. Vickers, Sons & Maxim—whose initials appear on the projectile—were instrumental in producing early automatic weapons and ammunition for the British military.

*Condition*
Inert display round in good condition with patinated surface and visible driving bands. Projectile is firmly affixed to the casing but shows signs of partial thread movement. Brass case has typical surface marks and dulling commensurate with age. No visible cracks or deep dents. Base markings are obscured through age.
Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
