Description

*British, WW1, c.1907–1920s, Naval Women’s Friendly Association Enamel Badge, J.R. Gaunt London*

A gilt-brass and enamel membership badge for the Naval Women’s Friendly Association, 2.6 cm in diameter, of roundel form with four projecting panels. White enamel legend reads “WOMEN’S  / NAVAL/ FRIENDLY / ASSOCIATION”, and the royal-blue enamel legend reading “FOUNDED 1907 ” The centre shows a Tudor warship in gilt. Original pin-back fitting to reverse, stamped J.R. GAUNT LONDON.

Historical Note:
Founded in 1907, the Naval Women’s Friendly Association was a benevolent “friendly society” supporting the wives, mothers and daughters of Royal Navy personnel—offering mutual aid, small grants and social fellowship in the years before comprehensive state welfare. Badges like this, supplied by leading insignia makers J.R. Gaunt & Son, were worn to show membership and to promote fundraising at events and parades. The Tudor ship motif evokes the Navy’s long lineage and appears widely in Edwardian naval heraldry. Production and style suggest an Edwardian to early inter-war issue (c.1907–1920s).

*Condition*
Good, original condition overall. Enamel remains bright with minor surface wear and a few tiny nicks to the blue. Gilt brass reverse with age toning, scattered verdigris around the hinge/catch. Pin present and functioning. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
