Description

*British, WW1, HM Submarine B10 – Original Photograph*

Original Photograph of WW1 Submarine B10. This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 21.5cm x 16.5cm

HMS B10 was a British B-class submarine launched in 1906 and initially assigned to the Home Fleet before transferring to the Mediterranean in 1912. During World War I, she served in the Dardanelles and later supported Italian forces in the Adriatic. On 9 August 1916, while anchored in Venice, B10 was sunk by an Austro-Hungarian air raid, becoming the first submarine in history lost to an aircraft. Salvaged by the Italians, she caught fire during repairs and was scrapped.

B10 measured 142 feet (43.4 m) in length, displaced 287 long tons surfaced, and had a crew of 15. She was powered by a 600 hp Vickers petrol engine and a 180 hp electric motor, reaching speeds of 12 knots (22 km/h) surfaced and 6.5 knots (12 km/h) submerged, with a range of 1,000 nautical miles (1,900 km). Armed with two 18-inch (450 mm) torpedo tubes, she rarely carried reloads due to fuel constraints.

During her Adriatic patrols, B10 had minor encounters, including an unsuccessful torpedo attack and a near-miss with a naval mine. After being bombed in Venice, she was refloated on 23 August, but a fire during repairs rendered her a total loss. Her stripped hull was sold for scrap.
