A First World War British No. 5 Mk I “Mills Bomb” hand grenade in relic condition. Constructed of cast iron with its classic 16-panel segmented casing, the body retains its integral base plug (corroded but intact), with fuze well open and striker assembly absent. The surface shows heavy pitting and oxidation consistent with long-term ground recovery.

Historical Note:
Introduced in 1915 by William Mills of Birmingham, the No. 5 Mk I was Britain’s first widely adopted fragmentation grenade. It served extensively in the trenches of the Western Front, with its robust segmented design intended to enhance grip and aid fragmentation (though the pattern was largely functional for handling). It remained in service until superseded by later patterns, such as the No. 23 and No. 36, but continues to be one of the most iconic symbols of WW1 infantry combat.
