A wonderful WW1 Souvenir - this Mark II Howitzer shell case has been made into a wall mounted clock, with a quartz battery operated mechanism, depressed red dots have been added for the 5 and 15 minute markers. The shell case was made by Curran Metals and Munitions Co. Ltd, Cardiff in 1918.

The Ordnance QF 4.5-inch howitzer was the British Empire's standard field howitzer during World War I, replacing the BL 5-inch howitzer and equipping about 25% of field artillery units. Introduced in 1910, it remained in service until early 1942, originally horse-drawn until mechanization in the 1930s.

Widely used by British and Commonwealth forces—and even by Russia and British troops in Russia in 1919—its 114mm shell was heavier than the German 105mm equivalent, with no direct French counterpart. In World War II, it was deployed by the British Expeditionary Force in France and by units in East Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East.
