*British, WW2, Campaign Medal Trio, 1939–45 Star, France & Germany Star, War Medal 1939–45 – Court Mounted, with Miniatures*
An original Second World War British campaign medal trio comprising the 1939–45 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the War Medal 1939–45, mounted for wear as shown, together with the corresponding miniature dress medals mounted on a bar.
1939–45 Star: The bronze six-pointed star bearing the crowned Royal Cypher of King George VI, encircled by the legend “THE 1939–1945 STAR.” Ribbon of dark blue, red and light blue, representing the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force. The reverse plain as issued. Good even patina to the bronze with light service wear.
France and Germany Star: Bronze six-pointed star with the crowned GR VI cypher and circlet reading “THE FRANCE AND GERMANY STAR.” Ribbon of red, white and blue with narrow yellow edges, reflecting the colours of the Allied nations and the European theatre. Reverse plain. Attractive aged tone with natural oxidation consistent with age.
War Medal 1939–1945: Cupro-nickel issue bearing the crowned effigy of King George VI facing left with legend “GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX ET INDIAE IMP.” Reverse showing the lion standing over the defeated eagle with dates 1939–1945 above. Suspended from ribbon of red, white and blue stripes. Clean example with good detail remaining to high points.
The medals are court mounted on a horizontal bar with pin fitting to reverse, ready for wear or display, the France and Germany Star is loose. Ribbons show some age-related creasing and light fraying in places, consistent with long-term storage.
Accompanying the full-size group is a corresponding miniature trio, mounted as worn. The miniatures closely match the full-size awards and are mounted on a brooch bar with pin to reverse.
Historical Note:
The 1939–45 Star was awarded for six months’ operational service in the armed forces during the Second World War. The France and Germany Star was awarded for operational service in France, Belgium, the Netherlands or Germany between 6 June 1944 and 8 May 1945 (with earlier qualifying service for aircrew and certain naval operations). The War Medal 1939–45 was awarded to all full-time personnel who completed 28 days’ service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.
Such trios are typical of service personnel who took part in the North-West Europe campaign following D-Day and who completed the required qualifying service during the war.
