*British, WW2 era, Royal Engineers Old Comrades Association (OCA) Enamel Lapel Badge – J.R. Gaunt London – King’s Crown*
An attractive and original British Royal Engineers Old Comrades Association (OCA) gilt and enamel lapel badge, manufactured by the renowned military insignia maker J.R. Gaunt of London. Featuring the King’s (Tudor) Crown and retaining its original crescent buttonhole fitting to the reverse, this compact veteran’s association badge was intended for wear on civilian attire by former serving members of the Corps of Royal Engineers.
The badge displays the intertwined “RE” cypher at its centre in gilt over a rich blue enamel ground, surrounded by a red enamel ring reading “OLD COMRADES ASSOCIATION.” Below appears the blue enamel motto scroll “SERVICE – NOT SELF,” a sentiment strongly associated with veterans’ and comradeship organisations. The entire design is framed within a laurel wreath and surmounted by a King’s Crown, placing manufacture broadly within the reigns of George V or George VI, and most commonly associated with the inter-war and Second World War era.
The reverse retains its original crescent buttonhole mount and is maker marked “J.R. GAUNT LONDON.” J.R. Gaunt & Son was one of Britain’s most respected military insignia manufacturers and produced a vast range of regimental badges, sweetheart pieces, association insignia and ceremonial fittings throughout the late Victorian and twentieth century periods.

History Note:
The Royal Engineers Old Comrades Association served as the veterans' organisation for former members of the Corps of Royal Engineers, allowing ex-servicemen to maintain friendships, welfare links and regimental identity after leaving active service. Such organisations flourished after both World Wars, particularly as large numbers of servicemen returned to civilian life. The organisation later evolved into what is now known as the Royal Engineers Association (REA). Lapel badges of this style allowed veterans to continue displaying their Corps affiliation discreetly while wearing civilian clothing.

Good original condition with strong gilt finish and pleasing age-related wear. Enamel remains largely intact with only light surface wear and minor losses visible under close inspection.
