Description

*British, WW2, HM Submarine Safari (P211) – Original Photograph*

Original Photograph of WW2 Submarine Safari (P211). This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 21.5cm x 16.4cm (faint Admiralty Stamp on the front and marked Safari in pen front and back)

HMS Safari was a third-batch S-class submarine of the Royal Navy, active during World War II. Commissioned in 1942, she operated primarily in the Mediterranean, sinking 25 ships, mostly Italian.

Laid down in 1940 and launched in 1941, Safari began patrols in mid-1942. She first struck in July, sinking the Italian merchant ship Adda. She later participated in Operation Pedestal, then joined the 10th Submarine Flotilla in Malta, sinking ships in the Adriatic and off Sicily. By late 1942, she operated near Libya, where she mistakenly torpedoed a port mole, causing damage and casualties.

In 1943, Safari moved to the 8th Submarine Flotilla in Algiers. Despite being mistakenly bombed by British aircraft, she continued sinking enemy vessels and supported special operations in Sicily and Sardinia. During Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily, she acted as a radio beacon.

Returning to England in September 1943, Safari was reassigned to the 7th Submarine Flotilla for training, with a brief patrol off Norway in 1944 due to concerns over the German battleship Tirpitz.

After the war, she was placed in reserve and sold for scrapping in January 1946. However, she sank enroute to the breakers off Portland the following day.
