Description

*British, WW2, RAF Sweetheart Brooch, Kings Crown, Enamelled*

A gilt and enamel WWII RAF sweetheart brooch with the King’s Crown and motto “Per Ardua Ad Astra”—a wartime token of love and service.

Description:
A charming WWII period Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, measuring 4.5cm wide by 2cm tall. The design features the RAF crest with outstretched wings, surmounted by the King’s Crown and surrounded by a dark blue enamelled circlet bearing the RAF motto “Per Ardua Ad Astra” (“Through adversity to the stars”). The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish with some expected age wear to the enamel.

Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were widely produced during the Second World War as tokens of affection, often presented by serving personnel to wives, fiancées, or mothers as symbols of pride and remembrance. This example, with its gilt and enamel finish, is typical of wartime production and reflects the high regard in which the RAF was held. The King’s Crown dates the piece to the reign of George VI (1936–1952).

*Condition*
The brooch is in fair to good condition, with wear to the gilt finish and some losses to the blue enamel, particularly to the lower edge. The reverse shows typical age toning. The clasp remains intact and functional. Overall, a well-preserved example retaining character and period charm. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
