*British, WW2, RAF Sweetheart Brooch, Silver & Enamel, King’s Crown*
A fine original Second World War period Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, crafted in silver and decorated with vitreous enamel. The design takes the form of the classic RAF pilot’s brevet, with outstretched wings, central “RAF” monogram on a rich blue enamel ground, and surmounted by a King’s Crown picked out in red. The wings are delicately infilled with white enamel, giving the brooch a striking appearance.
The reverse is stamped “SILVER”, confirming the metal content, and fitted with a period pin and clasp fastening. Dimensions: 5.5cm wide x 2.1cm tall.
Historical Note
Sweetheart brooches were popular gifts from serving airmen to their wives, fiancées, and mothers during both World Wars, symbolising pride, loyalty, and connection to the RAF. The use of the King’s Crown dates this example firmly to the reign of George VI (1936–1952), with the design most commonly associated with the WWII years.
*Condition*
The brooch is in good, original condition with age-related wear consistent with use. The enamelling remains bright, with only minor surface wear visible. The reverse shows natural patina and tarnishing to the silver. The fastening is intact and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
